But what else do you need to know about this condition and what causes plantar fasciitis to flare up?

Read on as we explain all about plantar fasciitis and triggers to avoid in order to not experience the heel pain!

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common form of heel pain, where your plantar fascia (flat band of tissue connecting your heel to toes) is strained. Because the plantar fascia is what helps support your foot’s arch, suffering from plantar fasciitis causes pain on your heel or under your feet while standing or walking.

Many suffer from it, mostly middle-aged people. It’s also common for younger people who are usually on their feet, such as those with intense jobs like waiting on tables or training as a soldier. Plantar fasciitis can happen with one foot only, or it can be both.

The main causes of plantar fasciitis is if you strain your feet from intense walking or when standing on hard surfaces for too long. It can also happen if you are overweight or wear shoes that don’t provide the proper support.

The symptoms of plantar fasciitis would be constant pain focused on their feet after sitting for a long time or right after getting up from bed. The pain progresses throughout the day, especially when climbing stairs or standing for a long period of time.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis to Flare Up?

Here are the three main reasons why your plantar fasciitis may have started flaring up :

Starting new or more intense activities

When you start changing your exercises or increasing intensity, then it may trigger your feet, causing more pain.

The remedy is to make sure you warm up and stretch before and after your exercises. Ice your feet or avoid exercises that will require you to be barefoot or will strain your feet too much.

Gaining weight

Gaining weight is the most combo factor to plantar fasciitis, as the added pounds strain your feet. It’s best to maintain or lose weight immediately. If you are pregnant, rest and elevate your feet while going through orthotic treatments.

Tight muscles

Tight calves can come from sitting too much or from strenuous exercise, causing your feet to feel more pain. To remedy that, you will need to lessen the intensity of you exercise, or to make sure you stretch throughout the day. Do not keep on sitting or standing for long periods of time!

New or old shoes

New shoes that do not offer the proper support may end up adding tension to your plantar fascia, causing more pain.

Your old shoes can also pose a problem, especially if they are worn out.

The remedy? It’s best to get shoes that do not need you to “break it in”, or those that are comfortable immediately, looking for those that come with orthotics or extra arch support.

How Can You Treat Plantar Fasciitis?

There is no specific treatment when looking for remedies to cure plantar fasciitis. Upon seeking medical help, you will go though a physical examination to be properly diagnosed.

The patient will then be prescribed to the right shoes, as well as an orthotic to help provide more support. They will also need to do stretching exercises and ice their feet.

A cortisone injection or anti-inflammatory medicine are also prescribed when the pain is too intense, and the patient may need to undergo physical therapy.

Treatment will depend on the length of time the patient has been suffering from plantar fasciitis. On average, it would take more or less a month for the patient to feel better. The longer one has suffered from plantar fasciitis, the longer it may take to heal.

Another choice would be surgery, but only if the condition cannot be treated by physical therapy or other forms of medication and remedies. This method is the last resort.

In Conclusion

Suffering from plantar fasciitis is no joke. Because there’s no specific treatment, it can get a bit difficult to find the specific way you can overcome it. But what you can do is to prevent the heel pain from getting worse by avoiding things that cause it to flare up!
